Simple tips to minimise back pain

Did you know that 4 out of 5 adults experience back pain at some point in their lives? There are hundreds of causes from sprain and strain through to arthritis and disc herniation and there are some simple things you can do to help minimise the chances of getting simple back pain:

1. Stay active - take regular exercise in any form but particularly walking and swimming as these are generally suitable for all ages and fitness levels

2. Flexibility - regular stretches wil help maintain flexibility and strength in the back

3. Reduce stress levels

4. Bend from the knees and hips rather than your back, particularly when lifting

5. Posture - good posture will minimise strains. Think of this whilst watching TV and driving in particular or if you work on a computer for any length of time.

6. Healthy eating and drinking - excess weight adds to the strain on the back and keeping hydrated will help the discs in your back to do their jobs as shock absorbers for the spine

7. Never bend and twist at the same time

8. Carry heavy objects close to the body

9. Carry loads in a rucksack using both shoulder straps rather than a one sided sling style of bag

10. Sleep on a supportive mattress - not too soft or too firm
